Should You Switch Milks?

February 26, 2026

Hello Reader,

Milk has been quietly fading from American refrigerators for decades. For a variety of reasons—from lactose intolerance to plant-based alternatives to environmental concerns—milk has lost its luster.

But one version has been trying to stage a comeback.

Ultra-filtered milk looks like a nutritional upgrade. Does it live up to the hype?

Sales of milk in the U.S. have trended downward for the last seven to eight decades. Despite that decline, overall dairy sales have increased, since we’re eating more cheese, butter, and yogurt.

Ultra-filtered milk, however, is worth considering if you buy milk. The filtration process increases protein and calcium and reduces carbohydrates and lactose.

Lactase enzyme is added to split any remaining milk sugar (lactose) and ease digestion. So, it contains less sugar and tastes noticeably creamier.

My latest blog article spills the tea on who benefits most from this type of milk and how it is processed into a so-called "super" milk.

I also cover brands to look for and break down the nutritional differences between regular and ultra-filtered milk.

Here are a couple spoilers:

  • 👵🏼Older adults, i.e., women older than 50 and men older than 70, can use ultra-filtered milk as a tool to increase calcium for bone health and boost protein to help preserve muscle and lean mass.
  • 🧒🏽Children and teens can benefit from the extra calcium to help teeth, fuel growth, and build bone mass during their rapid development years.

Cooking and Other Uses

A splash in coffee or tea is an easy way to add more nutrition to your beverage. It's especially marvelous steamed and spooned over matcha or espresso!

Ginger Milk Tea

Steam or froth ultra-filtered milk as a creamy addition to this energizing brew.

Of course, it adds protein to soups, puddings, and desserts.

Pumpkin Tomato Soup with Apples

I especially like it in this low-calorie, calcium-rich soup made with pantry staples.

Please reach out with an email if you have questions about ultra-filtered milk. FYI: It's pricier than regular milk because more milk is needed to produce it.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Kind and healthy wishes,
